Solar roof vent or whirlybird

Whether this is your first time you are hearing of solar roof-vent, or you already know that this basically a solar whirlybird, the most asked question we usually get from our customers is which one should they choose.

Well, here are the major differences between these two types of roof ventilation.

So, whirlybirds are the oldest and most used form of roof ventilation. They are quite cheap and easy to instal, although we recommend getting this done with a specialist. Depending on the size of the house you might need 2,3 or even 4. Whirlybirds rely on wind, which is good for the environment and is cost-effective, however is inconsistent. Relying on wind, means that they will do the same job in summer and in winter. This means that during those hot summer days with no wind the whirlybirds will be useless and during those cold windy winter days, the whirlybirds will suck out the warm air from your roof. Therefore, your electricity bills will be higher because you will need to use more aircon in summer and more heating in winter.

Now let’s see what a solar roof vents can do. Although, these are a bit more pricey to install, you should always look at the price-value in the long run. Why? Because one whirlybird will move 90-100m3 of air in one hour. So, most homes would need 5-6 whirlybirds to have a good air change, while one single solar roof vent can do the same job even on a cloudy day.

This means that the weather will no influence the efficiency of the solar roof vent. It is also important to mention here that solar roof vents only start working when temperature reaches above 25C degrees, therefore you will not lose any heat from your home during winter.

In conclusion, solar roof vents do cost you more to install but they are more efficient and will save you more money all year long.
